omnicron radiation

An unusual form of radiation that has no noticeable effect in low doses. Upon exposure to omnicron radiation, however, carbon-based organisms absorb it at a cellular level. Each organism has its own tipping point, generally at around one hundred megarads but in some cases considerably lower. When an organism's absorbed radiation exceeds that level, the organism's cellular structure instantly breaks down. The result is a dramatic cascading collapse of skin and bone that would be precisely like a bucolic waterfall, if waterfalls required biohazard cleanup teams.

onydium

Onydium is a malleable, precious metal that is impervious to corrosion, making it ideally suited to long-term storage of data and materials. Found only in scattered nodular deposits on some rogue asteroids, onydium is quite rare and therefore typically reserved for items of vital importance such as financial records, fine aged liqueurs, and holopics of certain Confed officials engaged in perfectly legal, consensual, yet politically suicidal activities that will never get leaked to the telewaves as long as payments to certain encrypted accounts continue to be paid. Update: As this edition of the Handbook went to press, scientists discovered that onydium nodules are actually astromoth cocoons. Further research is still being conducted to determine the conditions under which astromoth cocoons actually hatch.
